strongstart free play program (renfrew)

If you’re searching for something free, fun, and developmentally rich to do with your baby or toddler (especially on a rainy day), StrongStart is one of the best programs. There are locations all around the Lower Mainland and this Ministry of Education–funded drop-in program offers an inviting, play-based environment where ages 0-5 can explore, learn, and connect. It’s a great introduction into the classroom and/or daycare.

StrongStart has a drop in schedule with morning and/or afternoon blocks so you’re able to come and go around nap times. The typical structure is open/free play, sing along, snack time (free snacks are provided), and certain blocks have gym or park time. We visited the Renfrew Elementary StrongStart location with Valerie, who was LOVELY and sends out monthly email schedules with fun weekly themes for the activies.

Highlights for my little guy:

A pretend play kitchen with pots, pans, food, and dishes and a shopping cart to get your play groceries
Sensory boxes with rotating themes (water play, scoops, sand, textures, seasonal items)
Cars, trucks and push toys for new walkers
Cozy mats and soft toys for crawlers
Daily art projects and creative crafts for the older kids

It’s hard to believe the program is completely free and led by supportive early childhood educators. The environment encourages socialization for both kids and adults, and it’s easy to see why many local families make it a weekly routine. Every month, StrongStart also hosts experts from the library, public health nurses, dental health resources, etc to provide education and opportunities for parents to ask questions.

They require a completed registration form that you can bring in to any StrongStart location with your little one’s proof of birthdate (passport or birth certificate) and proof of residence (BC ID or utilities bill), then you’re all set to sign up for multiple locations. Start here.

The Renfrew location also pairs perfectly with other neighbourhood stops like La Saison de Patisserie or the Renfrew Public Library.
